Antimicrobial peptides produced by a wide range of animals and plants possess a broad spectrum of activities against bacteria, fungi, parasites, viruses, and even some tumor cells. Thus, antimicrobial peptides, as potential therapeutic agents against pathogenic bacteria and fungi which have becomeresistant to conventional antibiotics, have attracted research and development efforts. This report will focus on the newly researches about antimicrobial peptides, including the sources, the taxonomy, the characteristics, the possible mechanisms and the structure-activity relationship of the antimicrobial peptides.
